Just a quick note, I wandered 100 yards from my auto this morning and at 0645 I nailed a big doe with my friend Vaughan’s .300 savage. More later.

I had been in my tree since 0500 and had had several deer around me. It was just a matter of time before one made a fatal error and showed itself. This one did and the incredulous thing about the shot was that I failed to notice a 6 inch thick hemlock tree hidden in the shadows so the bullet even though it flew true to its mark had to go through the tree first before striking the deer perfectly behind the shoulder destroying both lungs. Thus the power of the .300 Savage. She is a beautiful eating deer and I am thankful for her.

Maybe in a secret meeting with Bill Clinton, or golfing with President Obama, or just screwing off for a few days before succumbing to his fate with the Raiders.

Are you ready?? This has been a rainy wet summer, great for mast crops deer love, acorns, apples, mushrooms and forest plant life.

For a morning stand these locations, or any trails or funnels leading from fields to them are a great place to set up a stand. Deer love to stop off for a little sweet snack before heading off to sleep for the day. I get to my stand well before daylight to intercept critters that leave the night’s grazing at first light.

If you intend to hunt a bedding area place your stand on trails going to and from the area, not in them, the animal will smell your having been there and likely abandon the area.

When field dressing a deer I always inspect stomach contents. It’s like reading a road map of where that animal has been and gives me insight into it’s wanderings.

If you have a favorite hunting area map out all the locations of white oaks. If in the fall the tree has nuts every critter in the forest will visit every morning early to gather the nuts that have fallen during the night. White oak acorns are sweet and are preferred by deer over the bitter ones of the red oak.

Well, just when I thought I had the whole communications thing figured out up here Verizon Throws a curve ball and requires new lines to be strung up for my computer. Should be done in another couple weeks. I am pirating airspace right now on a local car dealers Internet, they think I’m here to buy a new car, HA HA HA!

Anyway, all cool up here, archery season starts October first. Don’t forget, only 4 more weeks for you all back in NH. September 15!! Get your stands up now or never. If you plan on using a climber in a bedding area, I would suggest as late as possible the day before and get into it as early the next morning as possible before that big buck comes back to bed down, they tend to go in very early. If you want to hunt a feeding area look for a oak stand,(white oak is ideal if the tree has fruit) or a apple tree. Deer love to stop off at these places after a night of grazing on clover in the fields for a little sweet something before turning in. I suggest hunting the mowing’s and fields in the afternoon.

If you haven’t been shooting your bow now’s the time, and if it’s been awhile since it’s been in for a tune-up it would be a good idea to drop by your local pro shop. As close as it is to the season opener be patient, the shops will be swamped with other archers waiting to the last minute, so be patient.

Well, he almost made it, but I think the team ran out of gas too early. probably just as well, the Yanks are on a roll I don’t think any team is going to stop. Good for the players, but I still hope ownership chokes on popcorn watching the game. I also hope the Yanks get Manny over the off-season in some kind of trade. He turned out to be a disappointment after I thought he was turning over a new leaf.

After some searching I have been able to spin back in time and wander about some of the pristine creeks and brooks and capture actual native brook trout. these are not the biggest trout sought by most, 6 to 12 inches, but fried in a pan of butter for shore lunch by far superior to anything from the salty shores to the east. a pleasure to spend a morning wading in peaceful bliss working a nymph or meal worm past a banking or rapid and seeing the spotted head rise up and inhale the bait.

As before stated this place is rotten with deer, but the amount of rabbits is also impressive, HUGE cottontails everywhere. 4 per day is the limit and it looks like it will be short work to fill that bag!

Coastal fishing is reported to be very good for some, expecting some tasty fillets tonight for sure. Hook up with Captain Corey on the North Wind or with Al Gaurons party boats in Hampton and get those freezers going for the upcoming winter.

Which describes both the bovines and the deer population. I picked up a copy of the game laws yesterday and suddenly it all came back to me, few if any doe permits in Vermont. Even for archery, and to boot a buck must be a 3 point or better. No wonder these does wander around without a care in the world, fat, dumb, and happy, nobody shoots at them. Pretty country up here though. Never doubt NH has the best deals and hunting in the North East.

 Hello from Vermont!!

A couple posts ago I offered some advise on choosing a good party boat outfit to fish with. This is an informational blog and I try to post as much helpful information to those out there that are new to outdoors activities or might not be privy to information I am. As a result of that post I got positive response from readers and some pretty nasty mail from some party boat outfits, (one actually)so to take some of the heat off  some of my friends in the industry I have edited the post. Any inquires on the subject e-mail me and I’ll try to help.

On another note the deer and rabbit population here are abundant. At any time of day deer are out and about enjoying the abundance of food that grows here on the dairy farms. They and lightly different looking than our new Hampshire deer as they have much longer tail;s and thicker bodies. A different strain I wonder? I also wonder if they taste as good as our seacoast variety.

Fishing sucks here. Plenty of crystal clear streams void of life.

Last night there was a horrific accident in the Merrimack river. Not sure of the details right now but will keep this posted. The mouth of the river is EXTREMELY dangerous if there is a large sea swell and an out going tide.  Stay on channel 16 on the VHF marine radio for Coast Guard updates on conditions when ever fishing the Merrimack.
