i had a 17cal for over a year it is a geat caliber. but always thought it lacked a few more grams of bullet energy! i almost got a 223 but did not want the cost of the ammo. or the noise. i often wondered what the 22wmr was like so i got a good deal on a sako quad 22wmr. what a gun and what a caliber! if you cant make your mind up on a 17 or 22wmr go 22wmr it has a lot more killing power! 180 yards fox! no problem. even my mate who has a 17cal is thinking of changing over to 22wmr!!!

they are weaver mounts and I am not happy with them. the front mount leaves alot to be desired and I am told this is a problem with this model firearm. there is not enough room on the foward part of the receiver for a 3 screw mount. poor design. gun seems to shoot well though, and has tremendous killing power, so I should quit my bitchen. take it to a good smith and let him sort it out.

We have a Model 99 Savage .300 that belonged to my grandfather. It was likely purchased in the late 1940's to early 1950's. When I was in college (early 90's), I took it out to a local range for some shooting. It's a nice rifle. My father said grandpa shot several deer with it, as well as a black bear that he claimed charged him. He had the bear made into a rug, which we played with as kids (unfortunately, my cousin used it in a college play and stored it in a black garbage bag, which was stolen or thrown out)! I remember the bear rug had a hole in the head, just above the eye from where the bullet went in.

I think that the 17 HMR is twice the gun of any 22 i use mine for groundhog hunting. the 22 will not kill a groundhog but the 17 will roll them.

------ HUNTED W/336 MARLIN IN .35 REM AND KILLED MANY WHITETAILS IMMEDIATLY. HAD ALMOST SAME EXPERIENCE W/99SAVAGE IN .300 SAVAGE BUT NOT AS MANY IMMEDIATE KILLS. SAVAGE IS A BETTER GUN - .35 REM A BETTER SHORTRANGE KILLER. AT AGE 71 DOEN'T GET AROUND WOODS SO SPRIGHTLY ANYMORE, SO TOOK UP TARGET SHOOTING@ GUN CLUB IN NEWTON,NH. BOUGHT NEW WINCHESTER FEATHERWEIGHT DELUXE IN .308 WIN. GUN IS FUN TO SHOOT, VERY ACCURATE AND AS FINELY CRAFTED AS MY OLD 99 SAVAGE ( WELL, MAYBE NOT QUITE ).
